Surat: With the mad rush for registration on the Union govt's Government e-Marketplace (GeM) portal, the Southern Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SGCCI) has approached the authorities with complaints about technical issues and delays. " Micro and small enterprises (MSEs) from the city and South Gujarat are having trouble registering as vendors on the GeM portal. These delays can stretch for up to four months after applying," an SGCCI official said.
SGCCI submitted a written request to Ajit Chavhan, additional chief executive officer of the GeM portal, asking for smoother registration of MSEs. "A provision under the MSMED Act of 2006 mandates that 20% of purchases by central ministries and public sector units be made from MSEs, which benefits such enterprises," said Vijay Mevawala, president of the SGCCI. "MSEs from Surat and South Gujarat have been applying to register as MSE vendors on the GeM portal but are unable to register even after three or four months.
These hurdles must be removed at the earliest to facilitate smooth registration of MSEs from the region," Mevawala added. On his own registration experience, SGCCI group chairman, Kiran Thummar, said, "I began the process in July and submitted the required documents but my registration is yet to be completed." Ashish Gujarati, former president of SGCCI, said, "Registration on GeM is not possible despite several attempts.
While some agents offer paid services for registration, it is creating difficulties for MSEs to take advantage of it.".
