Pune: The Pune zone of the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) has seen its revenue increase by Rs5,137 crore in the last two financial years, driven by a surge in new electricity connections and improved bill collection. The state power utility's revenue rose from Rs16,143 crore in 2022-23 to Rs21,280 crore in 2024-25, with Rs18,390 crore in 2023-24. Chief engineer Rajendra Pawar attributed this growth to a significant rise in new connections, fuelled by rapid real estate development.

The MSEDCL has installed over 4 lakh new electricity meters in the past two years, bringing the total number of consumers in the Pune zone to 39.2 lakh, which is the highest in state. Moreover, the state power utility improved the efficiency of bill collection, reducing outstanding dues from residential, commercial, and industrial consumers from Rs124 crore to Rs69 crore by the end of 2024-25.

In the past two years, power theft amounting to Rs62.4 crore was also uncovered. "Over the past two years, efforts and measures have been accelerated in Pune to achieve the goal of 100% accurate billing," Pawar said.

The MSEDCL carries out a bi-monthly review meeting with the meter-reading agency and all executive engineers and accounting officers. The rate of accurate billing increased by 0.7%, while the average electricity bill amount decreased by 0.

9%. Additionally, the Pune zone made significant progress in solar energy projects. Pune's rooftop solar capacity has nearly doubled in the last two years — growing from 249MW across 9,977 consumers to 474MW among 28,604 consumers by March-end.

"Pune zone now accounts for 15% of state's total installed rooftop solar energy capacity," Pawar said..
