Chennai Super Kings (CSK) legendary wicketkeeper batter MS Dhoni’s parents, Pan Singh and Devaki Devi, were spotted spectating the team’s IPL 2025 group stage match against Delhi Capitals (DC) at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chepauk on Saturday. This is a rare incident of both of them being present to watch the former India captain play in an IPL match.
Their presence at the ground added more fuel to the speculations about Dhoni’s retirement — which have been floating around various social media platforms, mostly without any substance. Not many of his age continue to play the sport at this level but he has not only done that, but also managed to contribute to CSK’s needs behind the wickets with his still-sharp reflexes.
Ahead of the ongoing match against DC, there were also reports that he could be seen captaining CSK after almost two years. Regular captain Ruturaj Gaikwad had picked up an elbow injury and Dhoni was seen as the most viable option in the absence of any straightforward vice-captaincy pick. Batting coach David Hussey also hinted about the same in the pre-match press conference.
“I’m not sure, actually. I don’t think we’ve actually thought about that (captaincy replacement) too much. Well, I haven’t thought about it too much.
I’m sure (head coach, Stephen) Fleming and Rutu (Ruturaj) have thought about that. But we’ve got some young guy coming through. He’s behind the stumps.
Maybe he can do a good job. I’m not sure. He’s got a bit of experience in the role, so maybe he could do it.
But I’m not exactly sure, to be honest," Hussey said. However, come the toss, Gaikwad walked in and confirmed he was good enough to continue in this match.
