Kudos to Theodore R. Johnson for his critique of the electoral college in his Sept. 4 op-ed, “ The electoral college gets a failing grade ,” and for drawing attention to the winner-take-all system used by 48 states for allocating electoral votes.

In my view, that is the biggest flaw in the current system for electing U.S. presidents.

It effectively disenfranchises tens of millions of voters who don’t vote for their state’s winning candidate, encourages candidates to focus almost exclusively on a handful of swing states, discourages turnout in other states, distorts the results of the election and allows the winner to exaggerate their mandate..
