Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Wednesday said that only 5% of the 39 lakh acre land under Waqf is allocated to Mosques and cemeteries. Speaking at the News18 Rising Bharat Summit, Shah said that just Rs 123 crore revenue is generated from the total Waqf land. “39 lakh acre land is under the Waqf right now.
Some argue that it is used for Mosques and cemeteries. All of the combined is not more than 5%. The revenue generated from this 39 lakh acre is just Rs 123 crore.
Where does the income go? Those responsible are involved in corruption because of the ineffective audit system. We fixed the audit system and gave representation of every faction of the Muslim community,” said Shah at Network 18’s Rising Bharat Summit. The Union Minister also attacked Congress and said that the party passed the Waqf Amendment Act 2013, to protect its vote bank before the 2014 general elections.
“From Independence till 2013, the land under Waqf was 18 lakh acre. After the Waqf Amendment Act in 2013, 21 lakh acre land increased under the Waqf. This shows the provisions under the 2013 amendment act were not justified.
You declared any land under Waqf, even if it belongs to Hindus. Entire villages were declared Waqf and temples as old as 1500 years were also declared Waqf property. This was not the case before 2013.
Congress did this to secure its vote bank just before the 2014 general elections,’ he said. Shah further said that Waqf is like a trust and we did not put any provision to have any non-muslim in this. The two non-muslims will be a part of Waqf board and Waqf council.
He also said that Congress raised this issue as part of its appeasement politics to save its dying existence..
