PHILIPPI, W.Va. (WV News) — Philip Barbour out-gained Lewis County 445-101 and Drew Morral turned in a 201-yard, 3-touchdown performance as the Colts rolled to a 40-0 win over the Minutemen at BC Bank Park.

Lewis County went nowhere on its opening drive and punted after a three-and-out. The Minutemen struggled to get their ground game going against the Colts, who packed nine men in the box all night long On their first possession in a fast moving first-quarter, the Colts went to the air on the first play, then followed that up with a big run by Morral down into Lewis County territory. The promising drive stalled, though, after a personal foul and a high snap for a 12-yard loss for the Colts.

The Colts again surged into Minuteman territory with two long runs by Morral and another from Mason Jones into Lewis County territory before the drive again stalled as Lewis County forced a punt. Danner Groves blocked the punt, setting Lewis County up with the ball at their own 41-yard line. Lewis County couldn’t do anything with the field position, however, as Philip Barbour forced a turnover on downs after four Minuteman plays.

Philip Barbour finally broke through with 6:36 to go in the opening half. A bubble screen to Cameron Bennett moved the ball down to the Minuteman 10-yard line. On the next play, Robbie Jones, in for injured starter Braylyn Edwards, found himself wide open on the quarterback draw for the 10-yard touchdown.

The kick was no good, but the Colts had taken the lead, 6-0. The two teams traded turnovers later in the quarter on consecutive plays with the Colts losing a fumble to Owen Acord and the Minutemen’s Eli Jones throwing a pick to Malachi Poling, who returned it from his own 3-yard line to the 25. A personal foul for Lewis County moved it to the 50-yard line with just under two minutes remaining.

The Colts went back to the well again on the second play of the drive, this time to Poling, who pulled down a long pass at the Lewis County 32-yard line. Jones then dropped a pass in to Bennett, who took it down to the 3-yard line. On the next play, Morral took it in for the score.

The conversion run failed, and the score moved to 12-0 in the Colts’ favor. Things went from bad to worse for the Minutemen, with a fumble on the first play of the following drive recovered by Owen Johnson. The Colts took over at the Lewis County 32-yard line with 2:20 remaining in the half.

Four Morral carries later, the Colts were in the end zone again on another short run for the score. Jones added the conversion, and the score moved to 20-0 with under 40 seconds showing on the clock. Philip Barbour fumbled away a promising opening drive of the second half, with Jones recovering for Lewis County.

The Colts turned a bad situation in their favor midway through the third when a bad snap sailed high on a Colts punt attempt. Bennett fielded the ball in the backfield, broke containment and raced more than 30 yards for the first down. Five plays later, Morral took it in from the 1-yard line for the score.

The run failed, moving the score to 26-0 with 5:01 to go in the third quarter. Lewis County fumbled again on the following kickoff, but got it back shortly after when Garrett Moats jumped in front of a Jones pass for an interception. The Colts added a pair of scores in the fourth quarter the first on a 14-yard run by Tyler Vance and the second on a 35-yard run by Mason Jones.

Morral finished the game with 201 yards on 25 carries and three scores while Jones ran for 75 on seven carries. Robbie Jones was effective in relief of Edwards, going 6 of 15 for 129 yards and one interception. Lewis County was led by Alex Goodwin, who had 58 yards on 17 carries.

The victory moves the Colts to 6-2 and they will travel to Shinnston to take on Lincoln. Lewis County falls back to .500 at 4-4 and they will be on the road next week at Fairmont State’s Duvall-Rosier Field for a matchup against the East Fairmont Bees.
