At just 21 years old, Sophia Morgan will be making her second consecutive appearance for Fiji at the Olympic Games in Paris later this month. Morgan was one of the five Team Fiji athletes who attended a farewell service at the Calvary Temple in Suva on Sunday and spoke on qualifying for the Olympics. “It’s a blessing to be able to qualify for the second consecutive year, and I’m also happy because all my hard work and sacrifices have finally paid off,” she said.

“I’m also blessed to be here at the service and to have a message from the pastor, it’s just very encouraging.” The International Olympic Committee Scholarship recipient qualified for the 2024 Games through merit at the Sail Sydney Olympic Qualifying regatta in December last year, and is looking to improve her performance from the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo. She finished eighth in the competition, which saw her gain qualification for the Paris Olympics.

“I aim to do better than the last Olympics and I thank my family and my coaches for all their support over the past few months in helping me with my preparation.” Morgan was part of the Team Fiji side to the Pacific Games in the Solomon Islands last year where she managed to scoop two silver medals. “My aim for this year’s Olympics is just to do better than I did at the last Olympics, and I just can’t wait to get in the water and compete.
