BUFFALO, N.Y. — If you're shopping for strollers, car seats, or other baby gear, you could soon notice some higher prices, if tariffs do take effect .
Some brands are already raising their prices. Some baby gear is getting more expensive, especially with talks of potential tariffs. According to BabyCenter , prices for diapers and formula have remained mostly steady, but it's a different story for items like strollers and car seats.
Some stroller models have gone up 14% in just the past week. Car seats, including popular models from Chicco and Safety 1st, are going up around 10%. One local store, Kid to Kid Tonawanda , said they're seeing more families turn to secondhand options, especially for toys and baby gear.
"I called around looking for a bed rail for my daughter. I need a bed rail. Let me call them before $50 at Walmart.
I looked online. I called here. They had brand new one for $20," one customer Anna said.
"What the price of a toy for example. If it was $15 at the store, we are going to sell it for half of that. It's always going to be that way.
We're not buying from China, or another manufacture, we are buying from the public," Kid to Kid Tonawanda owner Michelle Talley said. "It's going to stay the same. It's smart for our customers just to shop here and get these quality items because it's going to stay the same.
" At Harvest House, a growing number of families are also turning to nonprofits for help, serving nearly 700 children a month. "So much money is going towards rent and just getting clothes and socks and underwear and things like that. It is not an option for them to be able to get these kinds of things without this type of support," Brandy Loveland, CIOO with Harvest House said.
Supply experts said if you've had your eye on a big-ticket item, now might be the time to buy before prices climb even more. "So if you can, get some of the goods now, more cheaply. Toys are probably going to go up in price, strollers, high chairs, safety seats.
A lot of safety equipment that might see a price increase," Scott Laing, PhD, a Clinical Assistant Professor of Finance at University at Buffalo's School of Management said. "There's a lot of resources in the second hand goods and getting creative at home. I know there is a lot of interest in TikTok DIY videos or Pinterest DIY videos.
" Harvest House is preparing for its third annual community baby shower to help new parents gear up without the heavy financial burden. This event will happen in August. Kid to Kid Tonawanda is open everyday.
They are open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.
m. Monday through Saturday, and from 12 p.m.
to 5 p.m. on Sunday.
They are located on Niagara Falls Blvd. They also have a second location in West Seneca on Union Road..
