A games store in south Calgary was broken into Monday morning by a suspect who, according to the owner, stole more than $5,000 worth of Pokemon cards. Olympic Sports Cards and Games posted a video of the incident on their Instagram account in which a suspect wearing a hoodie swiped several items from a glass drawer a little after 4 a.m.
Archie Benekos, a member of the family that owns the store near Macleod Trail and 94th Avenue S.E., said he was alerted to the robbery by their security agency soon after the incident.
Benekos then saw four police cars parked outside his store. The stolen items were first-edition Pokemon cards, and each pack cost around $700. “They knew what they were going after,” Benekos said.
“We’re sad, we’re upset, but what can you do?” Benekos alleged the thief also broke the wall of the neighbouring store to enter his shop. A post shared by Olympic Sports Cards (@olympicsportscardsandgames) “So you come in and you see all that mess,” he said. “And it’s upsetting.
” The theft comes as Benekos and his peers brace for how tariff threats from the U.S. and counter-tariffs imposed by Canada would shape consumer prices.
“We don’t know what’s going to happen,” Benekos said. However, he added the store is prepared to bounce back from the predicament. “We’re not going to be packing up and leaving,” he said.
“There’s no way we’re going to do that.” Calgary police hasn’t yet confirmed if they are investigating the incident..
