Ms Car also announced that Asquith Boys High School and Asquith Girls High School will both move to become co-educational high schools in 2026.
Ms Car said the move to co-education in these communities reflects the preferences of the majority of local families. The decision follows Department of Education consultation the community which showed 65 per cent of primary school parents and carers preferred co-educational settings for high school in the Bayside area. "The larger student populations of these high schools will broaden the opportunities available for students, including expanded subject offerings and extra-curricular programs," she said.
Rockdale MP Steve Kamper said he was pleased to see there will be a new co-educational high school for the Rockdale community. "Infrastructure works will support the new co-educational school in my community to provide the best outcomes for local students," Mr Kamper said. Expanding the intake of the high schools will increase the range of courses and extra-curricular activities available for students, particularly expanding HSC subject offerings for senior students.
In recognition of the preferences of some students and families, the co-educational schools will also provide opportunities for single-sex-focused classes and activities. The NSW Government will also invest in infrastructure upgrades at the schools. The names of the new schools will be determined in consultation with the school communities.
These changes follow last year's decision for Randwick Girls and Randwick Boys High Schools to come together as one co-educational school from 2025. Year 7 enrolments at the new Randwick High School have increased for 2025 by more than a third, or 39 per cent, compared to the current Year 7 enrolments across the two existing schools.
