BBC gardener Monty Don once admitted he cries “all the time” in a heartbreaking admission. The Gardeners’ World star is actually very in touch with his emotions, and admitted one of the smallest things that can bring a tear to his eye during a 2009 interview with The Independent. Asked when he last cried, the star admitted: “I cry all the time, most recently two days ago, when I realised the housemartins had gone away.
” In the same interview, he detailed some of his home struggles – admitting that his parents were “very strict” when he was growing up. Monty said: “My father was an army officer who left the forces when I was six and never really fitted back into civilian life. My mother had five children and a mother with Alzheimer's , who lived with us, so I imagined that she had a lot to do.
” And as for his “greatest regret”, Don said: “That I had to sell a house I loved in order to tidy up my disastrous business affairs. But I don't bitterly regret it; it was sad but not a disaster.” Monty has faced a wealth of struggles in recent years, having to bid a tragic farewell to his beloved golden retriever Nell in 2023, after a battle with cancer .
He revealed on social media: “I was going to tell you about my new book which is published next week but that can wait because my lovely dear Nell died last night. “She was diagnosed with cancer in June and every day this summer has been a gift but it is over now. We buried her in the garden next to Nigel wrapped in one of my jackets with flowers, balls and her favourite biscuits.
"Her end was peaceful and dignified and ended obvious suffering but it never gets any easier to bear. So life goes on, but for the moment we are very, very sad." He lost another pooch, Nigel, in 2020, announcing via Instagram : “I am very sorry to announce that Nigel has died.
To the end he was happy, healthy and his usual calm, lovely self. “But he was suddenly taken ill and he slipped quietly away with no pain or suffering and is now buried in the garden with lots of tennis balls. Rest now old friend.
See you in the sweet bye and bye.”.
