Monty Don is widely admired for his extensive horticultural expertise and keen landscaping insight, frequently featured on the popular BBC series, Gardeners' World . The presenter often shares glimpses of his own cottage garden nestled in the stunning Herefordshire countryside, where he has amassed ove r 1.3 million devoted followers on Instagram .
Nonetheless, this past Monday, his garden became a point of contention online as some fans queried the decision behind two large "conifers" he showcased on his social media profile. Several of his fans found the trees unappealing and felt they clashed with the cottage garden's delicate flowers. One person remarked, "I love your gardens—but not this one.
The conifers look so out of place, especially with the tops being horizontal and not leaving their standard shape. If it were my garden, I would remove them. I love the tulips, though!" Monty quickly clarified that the trees are actually "Irish yews," which are often used by gardeners to create focal points in a landscape or to add vertical accents.
He said: "Each to their own...
and not conifers but Irish yews looking lovely with their flat tops!" However despite his justfication, others continued to query his choice as they felt "distracted" by the dense trees. A second person added: "Agree about the trees, find them very off putting. The rest is really beautiful.
" While a third wrote: "I don't like the trees, the colour is too dark against the cottage gentleness. But as Monty says, 'Each to their own'." Monty, a regular attendee at the RHS Chelsea Flower Sho w over the years, is now designing his first garden for the prestigious event.
His entry, titled "The RHS and Radio 2 Dog Garden," will be inspired by his own private garden and aims to create a calm environment for dogs and their owners. In collaboration with Jamie Butterworth, a renowned plant expert and RHS ambassador, Monty will partner with Form Plants to bring this unique project to life. The RHS and Radio 2 Dog Garden is set to be unveiled at the Chelsea Flower Show, which begins on Tuesday, May 20, and runs for four days.
Monty expressed his excitement for his latest endeavour, as he shared: "This is an irresistible opportunity to join with the RHS and Radio 2 to share my love of gardens and dogs at the world's greatest horticultural event.".
