Jashore's Monihar Cinema Hall, one of Bangladesh's most iconic theatres, made headlines last week with its sudden removal of Shakib Khan's highly anticipated film "Dorod". Just a day after its premiere last Friday, the romantic psycho-thriller was pulled to make way for Shihab Shaheen's romantic drama "Chuye Dile Mon". However, "Dorod" was reintroduced to the cineplex the following day, raising eyebrows among moviegoers.
Faruk Ahmed, manager of Monihar Cineplex, confirmed the film's removal and explained the decision to Prothom Alo. "Shakib Khan's 'Dorod' has been pulled from our cineplex. We are now screening Shihab Shaheen's 'Chuye Dile Mon'," he said.
Explaining the rationale, Faruk cited disappointing box office earnings. "We invested heavily in upgrading our cinema into a cineplex and acquired this film at a significant cost. Unfortunately, 'Dorod' didn't perform as expected.
So, we had to take it down," he stated. Faruk added that while the film was removed from the cineplex, it continued screening in Monihar's single-screen theatre. However, the decision didn't sit well with the audience.
On Saturday, "Dorod" returned to the cineplex. Addressing the re-release, Faruk explained, "Our cineplex is brand new. When we replaced 'Dorod' with an older film, audiences reacted negatively.
They didn't want to watch a dated movie in a modern facility. Also, with no other new releases available, bringing back 'Dorod' seemed like the best option." The film had launched with significant fanfare, premiering across 84 theatres nationwide.
It marked Shakib Khan's first pan-Indian venture and drew immense anticipation, particularly from his loyal fanbase. On its opening day, "Dorod" set a record for ticket sales at multiplexes. Yet, by the week's end, it struggled to maintain momentum both in single-screen theaters and cineplexes.
Directed by Anonno Mamun, "Dorod" stars Shakib Khan as Dulu Miah, alongside Bollywood actress Sonal Chauhan as Fatima. A joint production between Bangladesh and India, the film features a star-studded cast, including Payel Sarkar, Rahul Dev, Alok Jain, and Rajesh Sharma. Anonno Mamun also penned the story and screenplay, while the producers include Ashok Dhanuka, Himanshu Dhanuka, Kamal Mohammad Kibria, and Mamun himself.
The Hindi version of the film is co-produced by Karan Shah of One World Movies, with Action Cut Entertainment managing global distribution..
