The 2m chase last time only saw eight fences jumped as two were omitted, so with 13 this time around he should be able to make it a proper chase display rather than more of a flat last time when he won by a neck, but always doing enough. His chase debut saw him place a close second in May and now he can make that 2-3 over fences under Harry Skelton, with the yard and jockey in form. Travail Dorfevre has been super consistent over fences, especially last season never placing out of the top three.
But he's not often got his head in front and looks to prefer a softer surface. He's hard to back at this price as his form has kept him at the around the same weight for his last six races and never gone beyond that, making it 13 chase starts and only one victory. I do like Carcaci Castle at 10/1 though over an odds-on shot, though the favourite is very backable so unexposed over fences.
But this gelding making his first start since July could be up there as he's proven himself over fences, winning in June at Hexham as well as going close to the impressive chaser Gardener on his debut over fences back in February. He wasn't disgraced either when carrying second top weight and placing third behind Cuzco Du Mathan and The Gypsy Davey last time out at Cartmel. That winner has since gone on to win again and was clearly making the most of a low mark, while The Gypsy Davey has been consistent at around his current mark.
A summer off could be all he needed and as a result it's worth either backing to place or each-way. Looks to be the best bet of the field with just seven runners in this novice Class 5 event over 6f. Dan Tucker has shown promise on his first two starts but struggled in listed company on soft ground for the first time.
Hard to back as a result but that could have just been too good of a field. Native Instinct was a close enough fifth on debut over 6f before going a respectable third over 7f here as well. Pedigree suggests he'll cope with the ground and the money has come for Native Instinct over Dan Tucker, despite the latter's very good second place finish of 17 here in September.
Will be tough for The Trickster to win two in a row carrying a 7lb penalty here for winning on debut and on the soft surface up to 1m1f will demand a lot. Novelista has gone well in his first two starts on testing ground behind some useful winners and ought to get off the mark here at a decent price. One More was an eyecatcher on debut at Kempton when plugging on for second behind The Fingal Raven last month, despite having blown the start.
He followed that potential up with another decent second behind Make You Smile at Newbury on heavy ground, which bodes well considering the conditions today. That winner went on to win by a nose to Yaroogh in the Group 3 Horris Hill Stakes on Saturday so he has clearly bumped into a very good unexposed horse. He now faces Belgrave though, over 6f instead of 7f, who also has good form coming into this along with the yard of Ralph Beckett doing extremely well.
The grey colt was beaten by under a length at York over 6f earlier this month, also on soft, however One More could still be unexposed especially over this trip and his form has worked out very well with Yaroogh a very tough horse to beat.
