Delhi’s 2025-26 budget allocation has risen by Rs 180 crore, bringing the total to Rs 1,348 crore—up from Rs 1,168 crore last year. A chunk of this is set aside as grant-in-aid (Rs 968 crore) and loans/advances (Rs 380 crore). However, key allocations like the disaster response fund and the Chandrawal water treatment plant have been consolidated under these major categories.
No separate mention was made this year, which has sparked mixed reactions, reported TOI on February 2, 2025. Budget with ET Budget Highlights: Gareeb, youth, annadata and naari feature in Budget. But the political landscape remains divided: while the BJP is singing praises, the AAP is feeling less than thrilled. Arvind Kejriwal and AAP members were quick to label the budget a “major disappointment.” Kejriwal took to X (formerly Twitter) to vent, criticizing the government for prioritizing billionaire loan waivers over middle-class relief.
“Why are loans for billionaires waived while common people struggle with home and vehicle loans? The money saved could have helped farmers and provided tax relief,” reported TOI, citing Kejriwal's post, which focused on lack of measures for job creation, farmers’ income, and tax breaks for small traders. AAP leaders also voiced frustration over the shrinking tax net, with only 2% of the population paying income tax while the rest bear the brunt of indirect taxes like GST . “Where’s the relief for the 98% of Indians who contribute through indirect taxes?” questioned senior AAP leader Jasmine Shah.
She also slammed the government for its “silence” on promises like doubling farmers' income and creating two crore jobs annually. On the other side of the aisle, Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva took a more optimistic tone, calling the budget a “new vision” for all segments of society. According to Sachdeva, the increased income tax exemption limit to Rs 12 lakh will boost the aspirations of young professionals and middle-class families, giving them more purchasing power and savings.
“This budget also focuses on EV manufacturing and sales in Delhi, a crucial step toward reducing pollution in the city,” he said.
