Mobil NZ has delivered its first shipment of renewable diesel made partly using vegetable oil, but wider commercial and public use is expected to take time as supply and cost demands impede adoption. The fuel, named Mobil Ethos+ Renewable Diesel R20, is made with a minimum of 20% renewable content, including hydro-treated vegetable oil (HVO) that has been refined from used cooking oil sourced from a range of suppliers in the Asia Pacific region. The first shipment of the new fuel has been delivered to HW Richardson Group’s Allied Petroleum (APL), which will use it as part of a trial in some of its own fuel tanker fleet.
According to Mobil, the renewable ingredient in the product will help deliver an estimated 15.4% lower life cycle greenhouse gas emission compared to conventional diesel..
