Salah, 32, is one of Liverpool 's all-time greatest players, with the Egyptian having scored a remarkable 243 goals in 394 games for the club since joining from Roma in 2017 for an initial £36.5million fee.
The forward has won eight trophies at Anfield and remains integral to Arne Slot 's side as they close in on the Premier League title. Salah's previous contract was set to expire in the summer and speculation over his future has been a major talking point throughout the campaign, with the forward regularly providing cryptic answers when questioned over his future. However, on Friday, the club confirmed he had put pen to paper on a new deal until 2027, ending the dramatic saga.
And shortly after the news was confirmed, Salah expressed his delight and revealed the reasoning behind his decision. Mohamed Salah has spoken for the first time since signing a new two-year deal at Liverpool 'Of course I'm very excited,' he told Liverpool's official website . 'We have a great team now.
Before also we had a great team. But I signed because I think we have a chance to win other trophies and enjoy my football. 'It's great, I had my best years here.
I played eight years, hopefully it's going to be 10. Enjoying my life here, enjoying my football. I had the best years in my career.
'My family also feels at home. We enjoy every moment in the city and every moment in the club. ' It's a special moment always when we play in Anfield.
There is no place like that. The warmth you feel inside, the song before the game. 'Everything about it, every moment you score a goal and they sing my song is something special.
' He continued: 'I would like to say to [the fans], I am very, very happy to be here. I signed here because I believe we can win a lot of big trophies together. 'Keep supporting us and we'll give it our best, and hopefully in the future we're going to win more trophies.
' In an unveiling video announcing the news, Salah was seen walking at out of the Anfield tunnel in his Liverpool shirt. He took a look around the stadium as commentatry of some of his greatest moments was played, beofre he sat on a throne in the middle of the pithc. There had been reports that clubs in Saudi Arabia were interested in the 32-year-old, with Al-Ittihad seeing a £150m bid rejected in August 2023 and it has been reported the Egyptian was viewed as a 'dream target' of the Saudi Pro League.
However, after putting pen to paper, Salah is now set to extend his eight-year association with the Reds. The news also comes after Mail Sport reported on Wednesday that Salah was close to agreeing a new deal. Virgil van Dijk, who is also out of contract in the summer, is likely to follow suit after dropping a significant hint over his future twice in the last week.
The captain said ‘progress’ was being made shortly after Liverpool's defeat by Fulham and Craven Cottage and told a kids question-and-answer event with Cadbury’s that a resolution will soon be found. It is understood the Dutch defender is heading in the right direction with his saga, too, and is on course to also put pen to paper on a new two-year deal – though nothing is signed or official yet. Meanwhile, Salah has enjoyed a stunning season in 2024-25, with the 32-year-old netting 27 goals and adding 17 assists in just 31 Premier League games.
However, throughout the campaign, he has also dropped repeated hints over his future and how his time at Anfield may be coming to an end as the contract saga rumbled on. In an interview with Sky Sports in January, Salah even declared that 'this is my last year' with Liverpool as he outlined his intention to depart with the Premier League title. Elsewhere, in November, Salah shocked the football world when he publicly called out the club for a lack of progress on offering him a new deal.
The forward conducted a rare interview with Mail Sport and a small group of other reporters after scoring twice in the 3-2 victory at Southampton , where he said he was 'more out than in'. Addressing his contract stand-off, Salah had said: 'We are almost in December and I haven't received any offers yet to stay in the club. 'I'm probably more out than in.
You know I have been in the club for many years. There is no club like this. But in the end it is not in my hands.
As I said, it is December and I haven't received anything yet about my future. 'I love the fans. The fans love me.
In the end it is not in my hands or the fans' hands.' Meanwhile, in the aftermath of Liverpool's 2-0 win against Man City in December in which the forward scored and added an assist, Salah again hinted that he could be on his way out of the club. 'It's very special,' the 32-year-old explained.
'I said before, I don't take it for granted. I'm enjoying every minute here. 'It feels like home.
So, yeah, it's a special feeling. It always is to score at Anfield and win games. 'Of course, honestly, in my head, it was like this is my problem, until now, the last City game I play for Liverpool, so I'm just gonna enjoy it.
'The atmosphere was incredible, so I'm enjoying every second here. And yeah, finally we just (hopefully) win the league and see what will happen.' But Salah has now put pen to paper and he could lift his ninth trophy with Liverpool in the coming weeks in the form of the Premier League.
The Reds are currently 11 points clear of Arsenal with seven games to go and are back in action on Sunday when they host West Ham at Anfield in what is sure to be a party atmosphere after news of Salah's renewal.
