1 2 Pune: City MLAs put forth several thoughts as part of their vision which includes ensuring storage of rainwater in the Katraj hill areas through small check dams, expediting Metro and ongoing infrastructure projects, survey of new roads and execution of pending DP roads as well as considering separate municipal corporations. The politicians were speaking on Monday at a function held by the Pune Union of Working Journalists (PUWJ) as part of the Vision 2050 series for the city and state. All MLAs expressed concern over water scarcity and uneven distribution.

Parvati MLA and minister of state Madhuri Misal said rainwater from Katraj hill areas could be stored by constructing smaller check dams on the foothills and stored water could be supplied to the city's southern areas. She said the forest and irrigation departments with Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) could study the feasibility. Kothrud MLA Chandrakant Patil said that faster execution of equitable water supply project and construction of 11 sewage treatment plants (STP) would provide treated water for farms and help save potable water.

He also said discussions were underway to use Mulshi dam's water for the city. Hadapsar MLA Chetan Tupe expressed a need to utilise water from Bhama Askhed dam for Hadapsar and Shivajinagar areas too. He said the city lacked equitable water distribution as some parts received supply only for an hour a day.

Patil backed the idea of more municipal corporations and said it was the need of the hour, since one alone would not be able to handle the growing requirements. Tupe also advocated additional municipal corporations for better planning and execution of works. Shivajinagar MLA Siddharth Shirole said his priority was to complete key projects — like the Hinjewadi-Shivajinagar Metro and the University Chowk flyover works in 2025 — which would bring relief to commuters.

He said the work of widening rail underpasses in his constituency was expected to be completed next year. MLAs said two ring road projects would reduce the burden of heavy vehicles on city roads. Wadgaon Sheri MLA Bapu Pathare expressed a need to develop roads from the city connecting to the ring roads.

He also proposed an elevated road with ramps at designated locations along the river till Theur for smoother traffic. Khadakwasla MLA Bhimrao Tapkir said development of DP roads was a major challenge in merged areas. PMC and the state should utilise credit notes to acquire land parcels for it.
