Missoula unveils draft of new land use and place type map

MISSOULA, Mont. – A draft of the Missoula 20-45 New Land Use and Place Type Map was presented to the public at the Missoula County Courthouse. This project has been underway for two years, involving a collaborative community process.

The early draft was revealed to provide insight into the future planning of Missoula. The map aims to balance property rights, services, the environment, and a sustainable economy, according to a public comment at the event. "The overall purpose of the act is to promote community well being through planning that balances property rights, services, the environment and a sustainable economy," said a speaker during the public comment session.



They explained that the map was developed through community engagement and previous planning efforts by the city and county. The speaker added, "We think the plan has many things to recommend it and makes real steps towards addressing many of the major issues we have here in Missoula from a variety of different angles." Despite the extensive planning, some community members expressed surprise at the project's scope.

"Even with careful attention, this entire project caught me by surprise last week at the All Community Councils meeting," said one attendee. The Missoula Planning Board will make a final recommendation regarding the project's adoption, modifications, or rejection. Another public hearing is scheduled for December 9, 2024, at 6:00 p.
