Missing student found dead near Lohagad fort

Pune: A 21-year-old law student, missing since March 18 from Pimple Gurav, was found dead near Lohagad fort in Lonavla on Thursday. Based on the evidence found at the scene, Pune Rural police suspect she died by suicide. According to investigating officer Balu Supe from Sanghvi police station, the student had been experiencing stress owing to health issues and had recently undergone surgery.

The student's uncle had lodged a missing person's complaint with the Sangvi police. The victim was a third-year law student in a city-based. "According to the complainant, on March 18, his niece had left home around 7.



30 am for college. She usually returned by 5 pm, but when she did not return home till late in the night, her relatives started searching for her and approached the police. We checked her cellphone details and found her last location near the Lohagad fort," Supe said.

"We alerted the Pune Rural police and reached there with the relatives of the woman on Thursday morning. Meanwhile, another team managed to trace the cab driver who had dropped the woman at the foothills of the fort," the officer added. Assistant inspector Prashant Aware of Lonavla Rural police told TOI that when the police team checked the footage from the CCTV cameras installed at the fort, the woman was seen climbing around 9 am on March 18.

"The fort closes for the public at 5pm. We checked the footage till 5 pm and found the girl had not returned. Suspecting that she might have been on the fort premises, we carried out a search on Wednesday," Aware said.

On Thursday, a team of volunteers from Shivdurga Mitra Lonavla, went to the spot and started searching for the girl. The woman's body was later found near a temple at the foothills of the fort..
