London-based, Algerian-born artist Miraa May has surprised-dropped a new EP, ‘Kind Regards’. Miraa created the project in LA and it marks a return to her RnB roots. Led by the darkly elegant ‘Ladies Man’ produced by Everett Moon & Lasik Beats, and the string-laden ‘Girlfriend’, Miraa centres themes of self-preservation and autonomy in numbers that luxuriate in the mid-tempo and sensual slow burner territory.
Take the brooding EP highlight ‘Shot Like This’, a number which pulses and vibrates with a steely intensity as Miraa reels off all her credentials to an ambivalent ex. Throughout Miraa explores power play dynamics between men and women, exposing the misnomers and double standards in not only romantic relationships but wider societal situations. Miraa May’s sound is shaped by the cultural richness of her upbringing.
Her mother filled their home with the sounds of Raï, Algeria’s vibrant pop music. Growing up in Tottenham, North London, Miraa discovered her passion for different scenes and subcultures, using songwriting as a form of cathartic self-expression and a way to thread together her affinity for subversion. In 2014, Miraa released her debut EP ‘The Beginning’ which caught the attention of award-winning producer Salaam Remi who produced breakthrough project, ‘ N15 ’ .
Then came the acclaimed ‘ Care Package ’ EP, a carnival-inflected exploration of consent, depression, heartbreak and freedom. Miraa released her debut album ‘ Tales Of a Miracle ’ in 2022, earning three MOBO nominations, including Best Album, Best Female Act, and Best R&B/Soul Act. Listen to Miraa’s story of overcoming, ‘Kind Regards’, below.
