The Ministry of Public Works and Environment is reminding the public that “fishing in the Seasonally Protected Areas—commonly called the ‘Hind Grounds’ and ‘Grouper Grounds’—will be prohibited from 15 April through 14 August 2025.” A Government spokesperson said, “These temporary restrictions are in place to protect vulnerable Red Hind and Black Grouper populations during their peak spawning season. “Red Hind is one of the most significant reef fish species in Bermuda’s waters, both ecologically and economically.
The Government believes that protecting spawning aggregations during this critical period will help ensure healthy populations for future generations. “This science-based measure supports the long-term sustainability of Bermuda’s reef fish stocks, which are vital to the health of local marine ecosystems and future fishing livelihoods. “The effectiveness of the closure period confirmed through ongoing monitoring, has played a key role in the gradual recovery of these species.
“Fishers are also advised that while the Seasonally Protected Areas will reopen on 15 August, certain Extended Closure Areas around key Black Grouper aggregation sites will remain closed until 1 December 2025.” : , ,.
