PALAKKAD: Transport Minister K B Ganesh Kumar visited the accident spot of the Panayampadam road accident that claimed the lives of four girl students. The minister inspected the safety by driving his official vehicle to the accident spot. He inspected the condition of the road by driving his own vehicle to Kozhikode and back.
Ganesh Kumar said the road needs urgent renovation and this requires money. Expect the highway authority to provide money. If they don’t provide it, the renovation will be carried out using the Road Safety Authority's funds, he said.
The minister, who drove his own vehicle, said that when approaching the junction while going uphill in the area where the accident occurred, the driver naturally tends to turn to the right. 'You cannot blame the drivers. It is a defect in the construction of the road.
There is space for two vehicles to pass on one side. However, on the other side there is space for only one vehicle to pass. Naturally, when the driver takes the central line, the vehicle will pull to the right.
The rear of the lorry that came from the right hit the lorry that came with cement and the lorry overturned on the children. The road is narrow on the side coming from Palakkad to Kozhikode. So, the first thing to do is to move the mark by two meters and place a divider in the middle.
The officials have been directed to shift the auto stand to the left. A fundamental solution must be found to prevent the vehicle from veering. Will talk to the National Highway Authority for it.
After consulting the PWD Minister, the Motor Vehicle Department and the Transport Commissioner will be called to Thiruvananthapuram next Tuesday. In 2021, a complaint was received from Shanthakumari MLA. After receiving the complaint, the former minister visited the accident area.
The National Highway Authority did not accept any of the recommendations at that time. The accident was caused by the defective construction they did. We will also discuss with the national highway authority after listening to the locals.
‘If they are not willing to allocate money, the state government's road safety authority fund will allocate the necessary money to implement the reforms,’ the minister clarified..
