Pune: The state is likely to witness a drop in minimum temperatures from November 18, after experiencing warmer nights over the past few days. The weather pattern is expected to change from Monday, with northeasterly winds beginning to prevail across parts of Maharashtra. "These winds, originating from north India, Madhya Pradesh and the Northeast, are relatively drier in nature.
The dry weather conditions will be conducive to a fall in minimum temperatures below 15°C, similar to levels witnessed earlier this month," independent weather forecaster Abhijit Modak told TOI. The temperature data of Saturday revealed significant variations across regions. While Gondia in Vidarbha recorded the state's lowest minimum at 14.
2°C, coastal areas and Madhya Maharashtra witnessed higher minimums. Pune recorded a minimum temperature of 20.5°C — as much as 5.
8 degrees above normal — on Saturday. Many locations across Maharashtra also experienced above-normal minimum temperatures, with Mumbai (Colaba) recording 25°C and Santacruz 23.2°C.
Modak said, "The higher night temperatures can be attributed to southeasterly winds from the Bay of Bengal, triggered by the active northeast monsoon in peninsular India. These winds are relatively moist and warm, leading to moisture incursion and partly cloudy night skies." The moisture influx has been significant enough to trigger thunderstorm activity in parts of the state, particularly in Nashik, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg regions.
Pune experienced cloud cover during afternoon and night hours, which played a crucial role in keeping the night temperatures elevated. "Cloud cover acts like a blanket, preventing the earth's surface heat from escaping into the atmosphere at night, thus maintaining higher minimum temperatures," Modak said. An IMD official forecast gradual changes in the coming days.
He said, "Konkan, Madhya Maharashtra and Marathwada can expect no major change in maximum temperatures for the next two days, followed by a gradual 1-2°C fall. Minimum temperatures in these regions may rise by 1-2°C in the next 24 hours before dropping by 2-3°C. Vidarbha's maximum temperatures will remain stable for the next five days, while minimum temperatures are expected to fall by 2-3°C during this period.
