Milei heads to NYC for his first UN General Assembly speech

Argentine President Javier Milei departed for New York City on Saturday morning, where he will address the United Nations (UN) for the first time at the 79th General Assembly on Tuesday. On Tuesday, Milei will meet X and Tesla’s chairman Elon Musk for the third time, in the president’s 14th trip abroad since taking office nine months ago. Milei will give his speech at UN headquarters less than a week after Argentina voted against a non-binding resolution demanding Israel end its occupation of Palestine within the next 12 months — the resolution passed by a wide margin.

Despite his negative vote at the UN, Argentina’s Ambassador Ricardo Lagorio of Argentina said both nations should resume a “process of dialogue based on the two-state solution.” The Milei administration bucked Argentina’s diplomatic tradition earlier this year by voting against Palestine becoming a full UN member of the United Nations in a General Assembly vote. Argentine media had previously reported that Milei was planning to meet with authorities of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) during his trip to the US. However, such a meeting has not been confirmed, although a spokesperson for the President’s Office told the Herald the schedule could change on-site.
