Pittsburgh Steelers right tackle Broderick Jones allowed multiple sacks and committed two penalties in Sunday’s 18-16 win over the Baltimore Ravens. To say the least, the second-year offensive lineman out of Georgia was a liability. Jones had a standout performance in last Sunday’s win over the Washington Commanders, allowing no pressures on 32 pass-blocking snaps.
He took a step back against Baltimore, but head coach Mike Tomlin is not fretting. “I am not worried about that,” Tomlin said when asked if he anticipates a personnel change with Jones. “You guys can write all you want.
Broderick Jones is playing right tackle for us. He’s going to continue to get better. He’s a top-quality player in terms of his talent.
He’s a young guy. He’s experiencing some on the job training. He and I will not blink.
Keep writing.” Jones did not speak with reporters after the game. The Ravens sacked Wilson four times on Sunday, and Jones was responsible for at least two of the sacks.
Ravens edge rusher Odafe Oweh had his way with Jones, recording five tackles (3 solos), 2.5 sacks, two tackles for loss and four quarterback hits. Jones had dreadful performance in the Steelers’ Week 8 win over the New York Giants.
Offensive line guru Duke Manyweather ripped Jones for displaying poor effort during the game. “Broderick Jones is too talented to play like he just doesn’t give a f*** and hates football!” Manyweather tweeted . Manyweather, who is the founder of OL Masterminds, trains a boatload of NFL and Division 1 offensive lineman, including Steelers left tackle Dan Moore Jr.
and former Steelers offensive lineman Kevin Dotson and Kendrick Green. Since 2018, he has seen 70 of his players drafted , including 12 first-round picks, 30 top-100 picks, with another 17 UDFA making rosters. Jones was benched earlier this year for his subpar play, but with rookie Troy Fautanu out for the year, the Steelers really have no choice but to play him.
They don’t have anyone on the roster who would be better, and Tomlin apparently isn’t concerned about the growing pains from the young offensive tackle. He expects Jones to smile in the face of adversity. Alan Saunders provided reporting from Pittsburgh.
