Michigan State’s hockey team has tapped into the NCAA transfer portal to bolster its blue line for next season. Colin Ralph, a 6-foot-4, 225-pound defenseman who played his freshman year at St. Cloud State, is transferring to MSU, according to Brad Schlossman of the Grand Forks Herald.
Ralph is a 2024 second-round pick of the St. Louis Blues (No. 48 overall) and had one goal and seven assists in 35 games last season.
He is expected to add size and physicality to the Spartans’ back end, which graduates two seniors this season. In 2023-24, Ralph played for Shattuck St. Mary’s in Minnesota and registered eight goals and 58 assists 57 games.
MSU, a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament, was upset by Cornell in the first round on March 27. It loses four seniors and has had two forwards – Joey Larson and Karsen Dorwart – turn pro instead of returning for their final years of eligibility.
Ralph, a Minnesota native, was a teammate of MSU goalie Trey Augustine for USA at the 2025 World Junior Championships. The duo helped the Americans win gold for a second straight year and will be reuniting next year in East Lansing. Augustine is a 2023 second-round pick of the Red Wings but is set to remain in college for his junior season.
The portal opened March 30 and closes Mary 13..
