Michigan’s Tate Carey kept Akron’s bats as cold as the temperature outside on Tuesday. The freshman pitcher tossed a no-hitter in the Wolverines’ 13-0 seven-inning run-rule victory in a frigid day at Ray Fisher Stadium in Ann Arbor with temperatures in the 30s. Carey becomes the first Wolverine to throw a no-hitter since Ron Hollis in 1994.
The 6-foot right-hander didn’t allow a baserunner until a leadoff walk in the seventh, but he still faced the minimum after inducing a game-ending double play. He struck out a season-high four batters. DOUBLE PLAY TO END THE GAME IN 7! THATS A NO-HITTER FOR TATE CAREY! pic.

80 to 5.32. Michigan’s offense provided him with ample support, although the floodgates didn’t open until the fourth inning.
The Wolverines (18-14) scored eight in the inning to extender their lead to nine and added four more in the sixth. First baseman Jeter Ybarra finished a triple short of hitting for a cycle and drove in two, while third baseman Cole Caruso also had three hits. Freshman Tyler Inge and graduate transfer Benny Casillas each had two hits and two RBIs.
Michigan remains at home Wednesday for a nonconference matchup against Oakland..
