Michelle Trachtenberg Died From Diabetes Complications

The New York medical examiner's office — which did not perform an autopsy at the request of Trachtenberg's family — updated her cause of death based on lab test results

Michelle Trachtenberg died from complications related to diabetes mellitus, according to New York City Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. As Deadline reports, the OCME ruled Trachtenberg’s death as natural and the cause was determined after a review of laboratory test results. Trachtenberg died suddenly on Feb.

26 at the age of 39. The news comes after the OCME previously said the cause of Trachtenberg’s death would remain undetermined after the actress’ family declined to have an autopsy performed because of religious reasons. The OCME obliged with the request because no foul play or criminality was suspected in Trachtenberg’s death.



Ostensibly, the lab tests used to determine Trachtenberg’s cause of death were different from an autopsy. A representative for the OCME did not immediately return a request for comment. In the years before her death, some of Trachtenberg’s social media posts had sparked concerns among fans about her health.

She addressed these in January 2024, writing on Instagram, “I’ve received several comments recently about my appearance. I have never had plastic surgery I am happy and healthy.” Following her death, reports emerged that Trachtenberg had recently received a liver transplant.

One source told People that the actress was “really, really sick and open with those in her circle about how much she was struggling.” Trachtenberg enjoyed a multifaceted career , first as a child star, then as a recurring favorite in an array of young adult hits. She found early success on the Nickelodeon favorite The Adventures of Pete & Pete before starring in the movie, Harriet the Spy .
