Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum warned on February 17 that Mexico would take legal action against Google if it continues labeling the entire Gulf of Mexico as the “Gulf of America” on Google Maps, CNN reported.Sheinbaum stated that Google had unilaterally changed the name of the continental shelf shared by Mexico and Cuba. She added that this change was unrelated to President Donald Trump’s decree, which applied only to the U.

S. continental shelf extending 22 nautical miles from its coast.”Reading out a letter from Google addressed to the Mexican government, Sheinbaum said the company refused to reverse its decision.

Google made the change after Trump declared the Gulf of Mexico as the “Gulf of America.” In response, Mexico sent a new letter to the company, challenging the decision. This development follows a recent Google blog post stating that U.

S. users would see ‘Gulf of America’ on Google Maps, while Mexican users would see ‘Gulf of Mexico.’ For international users, the label would appear as ‘Gulf of Mexico (Gulf of America).

’Why it MattersThe current order by President Trump is a noticeable departure from the stance adopted by the previous administration led by former president Joe Biden, which emphasized trade and cooperation between the US and its neighbours. Interestingly, this closely follows a slew of repeals Trump carried out upon taking office in January 2025, reversing decisions made by the previous administration. These include an Executive Order to delay the ban on TikTok in the US, a rollback of close to 80 Executive orders issued under Biden, including issues such as climate change, altering refugee policies, and even the development of safe AI, and an order against Government censorship—instructing federal agencies to steer clear of any actions that ‘unconstitutionally abridge’ free speech rights of US citizens.
