The Met Office has pinpointed parts of the UK that will be hotter than Barcelona in Spain and Corfu in Greece on Thursday as the spring equinox brings with it the warmest day of 2025. The spring equinox indicates the beginning of spring in the Northern Hemisphere and occurs when the sun is directly above the equator, resulting in approximately equal day and night hours worldwide. Meteorological spring always starts on 1 March, while astronomical spring begins around 20 March each year.
Temperatures have been “well above average” says the Met Office , as Wednesday’s highest recorded temperature was 18C in Northolt, west London. Thursday is expected to be “a little warmer”, says The Met Office meteorologist Simon Patridge, with plenty of sunny spells. He said: “The highest temperatures are expected in an area from London and the home counties to southern Midlands.
Here, we are likely to see 19C or 20C widely, with one or two spots likely to reach 21C.” The Met Office 's latest weather maps show temperatures peaking at 20C. On the first day of astronomical spring, parts of the UK may be hotter than Barcelona and Athens, where highs of 15C and 12C are forecast, respectively.
To date, the highest recorded UK spring equinox temperature was 21.5C in 1972. Met Office spokesperson, Stephen Dixon, said 2025’s highest temperature is unlikely to top that.
She explained how high pressure to the east of the UK is helping sweep warmer air to northern parts of the country, and that the sunshine we see on Thursday will be only broken by some fair-weather cloud in central parts of England. Though Friday will remain warm for most, some rain is expected to move in from the south-west. Showers are forecast to begin in Cornwall, gradually making way north-east during the day into parts of Wales and central and southern England.
