The Met Office has warned that more flooding could hit parts of the UK today after issuing a six-hour yellow weather warning. As much as 40mm of rain could fall over the next few hours in affected areas, the national forecasting agency warned. The new rain warning for northeast England reads: "A band of heavy rain will move slowly south through Wednesday, before clearing during the afternoon.
A further 20-30mm of rain is likely, with a few places perhaps seeing 40mm or more, leading to some travel disruption." This warning will be in place from 8.28am this morning until 3pm.
According to the Met Office , possible impacts from the heavy downpours include bus and train services being affected with journey times taking longer, spray and flooding on roads making journey times longer, and some interruption to power supplies and other services. Environment Agency flood alerts meanwhile remain in place across England on Wednesday morning amid fears that thunderstorms and heavy rain will cause travel disruption . There are 89 flood alerts in total advising of possible flooding, while another 15 locations are under flood warnings, meaning flooding is expected.
Warnings were updated overnight for the River Anker in Warwickshire and areas around the River Blackwater near Southampton. After a weather warning for thunderstorms in the south of England ended at 3am, the Met Office said showery rain would push into eastern parts of England over Wednesday, with sunny spells developing in the south. The Scottish Environment Protection Agency has also issued one flood alert for the Scottish Borders.
The alert reads: "Rain is expected to continue through Tuesday evening, but is likely to be heaviest in eastern Borders and in particular around coastal areas. Not all areas will be affected, but if the heaviest rain falls over urban areas or the transport network there could be localised flooding of low lying land and roads during Tuesday evening. There could be local disruption to travel.
