Severe weather warnings for snow have been issued for large parts of the UK as the country braces itself to be hit by bone chilling -20C temperatures. Southern England is on high alert for snowfall by noon today, January 8 as the Met Office issues a yellow weather warning. The forecaster has said up to two inches of snow could fall in the south of England today.
This warning remains active until 11.59pm and affects swathes of southwest England, southeast England and parts of Greater London . Brutal UK WXCHARTS weather maps have turned various shades of purple - indicating snow.
At 3pm this afternoon weather maps predict that the southern parts of England will be covered by a wall of heavy snow. Key cities including Brighton, Portsmouth, Plymouth and Exeter could all see up to 2cm of snow fall per hour. Snow shows no sign of stopping as we go throughout the afternoon and into this evening.
For many areas across southern England including Greater London the snow will ease off slightly with 1cm predicted per hour. Northamptonshire, Leicestershire and Warwickshire could all see flurries too, with 0.6cm predicted.
Currently, WXCHARTS predict that only small areas of Scotland will see snow tomorrow, January 9. However, the UK will not be spared for long as on Friday, January 10 another wall of snow will smash into the UK. London, the southeast and east of England are predicted 1cm of snow an hour whilst the north and West Midlands could see snow depths reach 2cm.
The Met Office is warning that outbreaks of rain, sleet and snow will push "eastwards across southern counties of England" today, wintry showers will also continue "across Scotland and Northern Ireland". Chilly temperatures look set to continue today with further warnings for ice, along with snow and ice across other regions expiring at midday. The cold snap is set to continue until the end of this week, with amber health alerts from the UK Health Security Agency in place across England until midday on Sunday.
