Gurgaon: Maximum temperature in the city could breach the 40-degree Celsius mark over the next few days, according to a forecast by the Met department, which has also issued yellow (to look out for) alert for an imminent heatwave. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) declares a heatwave when the maximum temperature exceeds 40 degrees Celsius and is at least 4.5 notches above normal.
The city on Sunday recorded maximum temperature at 34.9 degrees Celsius, 0.8 notches below normal.
The minimum temperature was 19.8 degrees Celsius. So far, summer this year has seen mercury touch a high of 39.
9°C on April 9. Temperatures plunged on April 10 and 11 as a fierce dust storm with winds gusting up to 40-60kmph hit Delhi-NCR, followed by light rain in parts of the region. The city's maximum temperature dropped 5.
3 degrees, from 38.1°C recorded before the storm on Thursday to 33.1°C on Friday.
But this relief will be short lived. IMD on Sunday updated its heatwave warning to April 16 and April 17, issuing the yellow alert for Gurgaon, Faridabad, Nuh, Palwal and Rewari. "Temperatures may not seem extreme yet, but high humidity and prolonged exposure can make conditions dangerous," said a meteorologist with IMD's Haryana division.
On the days with ‘yellow' alert, the Met department has advised people to stay hydrated, avoid long exposure to direct sunlight, especially between 11am and 4pm, and wear light and loose clothing on any heatwave days. "If you experience dizziness, nausea, or rapid heartbeat, seek medical help immediately," the meteorologist said..
