Mercedes-AMG announced that it’s building its first standalone high-performance SUV, marking the brand’s debut in independently developing an SUV entirely in-house. This innovative off-roader also marks the second use of the brand’s proprietary AMG.EA electric platform.
Development models are set to be tested this winter, where AMG will share a glimpse of its vision for the future of high-performance electric off-road vehicles. For over 25 years, AMG has been operating in the high-performance SUV space. Since the release of the ML 55 AMG, which effectively established AMG’s reputation in the SUV market, the brand’s SUV lineup has seen steady growth and popularity.
Today, Mercedes-AMG’s SUV offerings encompass six models, from the compact GLA to the spacious GLS, with the Mercedes-AMG G 63 standing as an enduring icon in luxury performance off-roading. This new full-size SUV will continue to build on the new technology currently being tested in AMG’s first EV on the platform. Unlike other models in the lineup, this SUV is developed from the ground up by AMG engineers and designers, following in the footsteps of AMG’s legacy models like the GT, SL and SLS.
Michael Schiebe, Chairman of Mercedes-AMG GmbH and Head of Mercedes-Benz G-Class & Mercedes-Maybach divisions, noted the significance of this launch, stating “SUVs have been among our most popular models for many years. With the ‘Born in Affalterbach’ SUV, we are responding to this trend by offering our customers a truly captivating high-performance off-roader based on the AMG.EA platform.
Our new high-performance architecture follows a clear philosophy: ‘AMG First, EV Second’. This means that the vehicles not only excel as electric vehicles but also embody the core AMG qualities of emotion and performance.” At the time of writing, the brand has not shared specifics on performance metrics or any imagery, however, we expect more to follow soon via official Mercedes-AMG channels .
