The Family Placement Service is looking for mentors to house and support young people leaving care.

Mentors are being sought to help young people in the island who are leaving care. The Family Placement Service in Guernsey helps young people aged 18-21 who may not be ready to live alone and need support to transition into independent living. It said mentors offered accommodation and helped guide young people through learning practical life skills and developing emotional maturity.

This year, there are seven young people leaving care who will get help from the Supported Lodgings service . 'Boost their confidence' Vicki Tennant, senior supervising social worker, said the mentors would support young people to develop transitional skills, such as cooking, cleaning and budgeting. "It will also be giving them emotional support, being that listening ear and giving them that life support during that transitional period," she said.

One young person was encouraged to go back into education after living with their mentor. Nicola Hubert, supervising social worker, said: "With that support from the mentor it can really boost their confidence and purpose as well." Mentors will also receive an allowance and support from the Family Placement Service.
