Menghini, Bechen score twice to lead Bulldogs over RedHawks

Sophomore wing Anthony Menghini finishes with three goals in the series to sweep Miami while freshmen Blake Bechen and Ty Hanson get their first goals at UMD.

DULUTH — Minnesota Duluth spotted Miami a pair of goals in the opening 15 minutes before blowing past the RedHawks for a 7-2 win in NCHC play at Goggin Ice Center in Oxford, Ohio. The Bulldogs scored seven unanswered goals, including three in the closing 3:24 of the first period to pull ahead and three more in the opening eight and a half minutes of the second period to bury the Hawks. ADVERTISEMENT Freshman goaltender Adam Gajan, who gave up two goals on four shots in the first period, finished with 18 saves one night after picking up his first college shutout.

com/ltQYZgbWaO UMD sophomore wing Anthony Menghini scored two goals Saturday via assists by senior center and captain Dominic James. They came with 1:27 left in the first period to give UMD a 3-2 lead and 4:28 into the second period. Menghini finished the weekend with three goals and now has six goals in the last four games.

He is tied with James for the team-high of seven goals this season. Freshmen Ty Hanson and Blake Bechen scored their first college goals Saturday. Hanson, a defenseman from Hermantown, tied the game with 2:17 left in the first via a one-timer on the power play.

com/5uF9LE50LZ Bechen had two goals Saturday. His first gave UMD a 6-2 lead just 21 seconds after senior wing Carter Loney put UMD up 5-2. His second came late in the third.

Loney had two goals in the series — his first two goals of the season. James finished with five points via a goal and four assists. Five players had three-point weekends: Shaugabay, Hanson, Bechen, Menghini and junior defenseman Aidan Dubinsky.

Miami sophomore goalie Bruno Bruveris of Latvia was pulled in the second period after giving up his sixth goal on 20 shots. Brett Miller, a fifth-year senior transfer who made 13 appearances in four seasons at RPI, stopped 11 of 12 shots in his Miami debut. ADVERTISEMENT Junior defenseman Joey Pierce was ejected in the third period for slewfooting Saturday, receiving a major penalty and game misconduct.

Miami challenged for the major, and didn’t score on the five-minute power play. The Bulldogs picked up their first two shots on goal of the third period shorthanded during the major and only generated four shots on goal the entire third period — scoring on one of them. UMD outshot Miami 28-8 in the first two periods before getting outshot 12-4 in the third period.

UMD was called for five penalties totaling 21 minutes in the final 20 minutes after not drawing a single penalty in the opening 40 minutes. Sophomore wing Matthew Perkins missed Saturday’s game with an upper-body injury, per KDAL’s Bruce Ciskie. UMD was also without freshman wing Max Plante for the 10th time in 11 games.
