
September 23, 1927 — March 30, 2025 GRAND ISLAND — Melvin H. Obermeier, 97, of Grand Island, passed away surrounded by his family on March 30, 2025, at Good Samaritan Society in Grand Island. Visitation will be held from 4 to 6 p.
m. on Friday, April 4, at St. Pauls Lutheran Church in Grand Island.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 5, at St.
Pauls Lutheran Church in the sanctuary. Pastor Jeff Pedersen will officiate. Burial will follow at Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery, with military honors by the U.
S. Army and United Veteran’s Honor Guard. Memorials are suggested to the family for future designation.

Mel graduated from Giltner High School in 1944 and attended one year at the University of Nebraska at Lincoln before returning to Giltner to farm.
On December 5, 1950, Melvin enlisted in the U.S. Army and served during the Korean war and was honorably discharged on September 5, 1952, when he returned to Giltner to resume farming.
Melvin married the love of his life, Maryellen Walker on July 25, 1954. They made a life together on the farm and in the home where he grew up. They also raised their five children there.
After his retirement from farming, he worked as a crop adjuster to keep active and involved. He also enjoyed his coffee groups and visiting during the week. Melvin was a member and usher of St.
Pauls Lutheran Church, a Shriner, the Masonic Lodge, Giltner Lions Club, American Legion, VFW, all of which he belonged for over 55 years. He was also a 4-H leader when his children were young. Melvin enjoyed and could be found working at the Lions concession stand at the baseball/softball games during the summer.
He enjoyed bowling and was in numerous leagues over the years. He looked forward to watching his kids and then grandkids in any sport or activity they were involved in at the time. He was very proud of all their accomplishments.
He continued supporting all the Giltner students for as long as he was able. Melvin was kind to everyone, had a gentle heart, a strong love for his family and will be deeply missed. He is survived by his wife, Maryellen of Grand Island; children, Randall Obermeier of Grand Island, Monte (Sue) Obermeier of Giltner, Douglas (Rhonda) Obermeier of Lincoln, Pamela (Dan) Hastings of Giltner; daughter-in-law, Barb Obermeier of Odessa; 15 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren with three on the way; brother-in-law and spouse, Cecil (Jan) Walker; and numerous extended family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Gregory “Greg” Obermeier; granddaughter, Alicia Obermeier Harvey; brother and spouse, Clyde (Rita) Obermeier, sisters and spouses, Lucille (Gerald) Hunnicutt and Rose Mary (Calvin) Hansen; brother-in-law, Joe Walker..
