A tragic incident of domestic violence has rocked the otherwise peaceful Niriang Village in Meghalaya's West Jaintia Hills. A mother of six, including a young toddler, was horrifically set on fire by her husband, suffering severe injuries in the brutal attack. On Tuesday, the Committee on Empowerment of Women, headed by Chairperson Santa Mary Shylla, visited the survivor.
Shylla, deeply disturbed by the horrific act, assured the victim of all necessary support and vowed to seek justice. “This is a heinous crime, and we will not rest until the perpetrator faces the full force of the law,” she stated. The committee, in collaboration with local authorities, is working diligently to provide the victim with medical care and psychological counseling.
A comprehensive investigation into the incident has also been launched. Jowai MLA Wailadmiki Shylla emphasized the government's dedication to supporting victims of domestic violence. He reassured the public that the victim would receive prompt financial assistance through programs such as Ayushman Bharat and the Victim Compensation Scheme.
The incident has sparked widespread public outrage, leading to calls for stronger laws and greater awareness of domestic violence. The community is being urged to step forward and report such cases to help prevent further tragedies..
