Three decades ago Princess Anne made headlines by becoming the first child of a British monarch to remarry. Her second marriage to Sir Timothy Laurence in 1992 was absolutely momentous. Not only did it make a big fashion statement but it also went against both royal tradition and the rules of the Church of England.
Princess Anne getting married for the second time was quite a tumultuous affair for the British Royal family. At the time, the church did not allow remarriage after divorce if the former spouse was still alive. However, the rebel that she is, Princess Anne chose to embrace the unconventional, starting with her decision to marry in Scotland and, of course, her unexpected wedding attire.
Foregoing the traditional and extravagant royal wedding gowns that were typically expected from senior members of the Royal family, Anne instead went with something a lot more sustainable and practical. The queen of upcycling and sustainability wore an off-white jacket with a matching flippy skirt, completely ditching the long, flowing trains and veils usually seen at royal weddings. Her outfit of choice was clean and minimalist, very on-brand with her down to earth personality.
The whole ceremony was a quiet affair too, with only 30 guests, including the Queen in attendance at the Crathie Kirk church in Aberdeenshire. What makes the ensemble iconic is that apart from being a short skirt, the bridal outfit wasn't even entirely new. Anne had worn the £400 white wool crepe jacket and skirt to Royal Ascot just a few months before her wedding.
However, for the wedding, the Princess added a floral headpiece to the look, making it more fitting for the occasion. The floral headpiece was, of course, a sharp contrast to the glittering diamond-encrusted crown worn at her first wedding. And, in another break from tradition, Princess Anne very confidently wore black court shoes on the big day, boldly stepping away from the expected white, ivory, or neutral-toned bridal footwear.
At a time when Royal protocols were definitely not relaxed and modern, Princess Anne came in as a tornado, defying expectations with her shorter hemline and skirt-suit set. She still remains the only British royal to wear such a short wedding dress. Get Latest News Live on Times Now along with Breaking News and Top Headlines from Trends, Lifestyle and around the world.
