Meet Ambria Abney: The new face of Aiken's Center for African American History, Art and Culture

People visiting Aiken's Center for African American History, Art and Culture are going to see a new face. Tourism Supervisor Ambria Abney started at the center in September.

People visiting the Center for African American History, Art and Culture in Aiken are going to see a new face. Tourism Supervisor Ambria Abney started at the center in September. The CAAHAC is located in the former Immanuel Institute at 120 York St.

N.E. It opened in 2021.



New exhibit explores how Gullah culture shaped the South "I have a background in journalism, English and African American literature," Abney said. "I wanted a job that would encompass all of those things, and I thought this would be perfect for me." Abney said she worked in radio while at North Carolina A&T State University.

North Carolina A&T is a historically Black university in Greensboro. "I got accustomed to being home again," Abney said. "Then, I saw being home wasn't a bad idea and with this job, I see I still have a lot to learn about where I'm from." Abney took over at the center for former Director Juanita Campbell .

Campbell left the center earlier this year for a job at the Savannah River Site. After Campbell's departure, the CAAHAC was moved from a separate entity to the Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism..
