MEDINA, Ohio – The board of education oversees the workings of Medina City Schools, district staff and students, and currently they want to take a closer look at how they are progressing as a board. Board members Rebecca Parkhurst and Amy Smoyer both said that at a recent policy committee meeting, there was discussion of undergoing a board self-evaluation. “I think we need to look at ourselves and assess what we are doing,” Smoyer said.

“We need to set goals and make sure we are attaining those goals.” Parkhurst printed out copies of the Medina Board of Education handbook for her fellow board members to review. “Our handbook is available online for not only our board members to view, but also for the community to see,” she said.

“It is on the school district’s website under the board of education page. It spells out what our roles and responsibilities are.” Parkhurst said she printed out copies of the handbook so board members can study them and decide if any updates or additions are needed.

“I encourage you do to this review and if there are any changes that need to be made or anything that needs to be added, just let Ms. Smoyer or me know,” she said. RECOMMENDED • cleveland .

Parkhurst also provided board members with copies of a board self-assessment which was developed by the Ohio School Board Association. “I would ask everyone to take a look at this,” she said. “I think it is important that we have a growth mentality and look at what we are doing well and where we could be doing things better.

This is something we ask of our students, so I think we need to be good role models.”.
