MediaTek just announced the new Dimensity 9400+ chipset for Android devices. This SoC comes as a generational upgrade over the existing Dimensity 9400, including some changes to NPU operations for better AI performance. MediaTek’s Dimensity 9400 was a big product during a shift in how the company develops new SoCs.

The brand dubbed it an “all big-core” design, offering up only high-performance CPU cores instead of a supporting cast of smaller, less powerful units. This change might raise concerns about power efficiency, but MediaTek has made a point of offering more power at a lower cost. Today, MediaTek debuted the Dimensity 9400+, which comes as a generational step up to the flagship design launched in 2024.

The Dimensity 9400+ utilizes the same core structure with a Cortex-X925 core, 3x Cortex-X4 cores, and 4x Cortex-A720 cores. The main X925 unit operates slightly faster at 3.73GHz than the Dimensity 9400’s 3.

62GHz clock speed. MediaTek notes that this series brings overclocked power, enchanting what it can offer in daily use. Where things seem to change the most is in AI processing.

The MediaTek Dimensity 9400+ has a proprietary NPU 890, which is found on the previous SoC. This chipset, however, brings Speculative Decoding+, which, according to MediaTek, offers a 20% increase in agentic AI speed. This process predicts tokens in parallel before the model has processed the current task.

Potential outcomes are interpreted before the model has finished processing, carving out the brunt of the processing load. MediaTek notes that gaming gets a boost with a new frame rate converter feature which includes 40% power savings. This utilizes the 12-core Arm Immortalis-G925 GPU.

Certain connectivity enhancements will also give the chipset an advantage over the previous generation. Bluetooth direct connections from phone to phone are extended up to 10km. Further, BeiDou satellite connections in China are now supported for instances without a cell connection.

The company also touts Wi-Fi 7 tri-band concurrency with five streams, as opposed to three streams. MediaTek’s Dimensity 9400+ looks like a promising and more efficient upgrade for flagships in 2025. The company noted that devices will soon launch sporting the new SoC.
