Posted: Saturday, November 9, 2024. 8:53 pm CST. By Aaron Humes : On the same day that the High Court granted an interim injunction to Leader of the Opposition Moses ‘Shyne’ Barrow and his executive leadership team to repossess the headquarters of the United Democratic Party (UDP), attorney representing Barrow et.

al., Immanuel Williams of the Glenn D. Godfrey law firm, issued letters to Great Belize Productions Limited ( Channel 5 News ) and Tropical Vision Limited ( Channel 7 News ).

Both television stations, after being informed of the result in court, are advised, “As you may be aware, the constitutionality of the unity convention held on October 20, 2024, is still an unresolved issue. As such, the Honourable Mr. Moses Barrow’s position as the UDP party leader remains unchallenged and unaffected by the events of October 20 and 28, 2024” – meaning the Unity Convention and the takeover of the Youth for the Future drive premises.

Each media house is directly warned to “refrain from referring to Honourable Mr. Moses Barrow as the “former UDP party leader” or making statements that could potentially damage his reputation or undermine his position as the duly elected leader of the United Democratic Party,” and conversely to refrain “from referring to the Honourable Mrs. Tracy Taegar Panton as the “interim party leader,” or promoting any similar narrative, as this matter is still before the Court and has not been resolved.

” As noted by Channel 7 News in its evening newscast on Friday, Williams told reporters shortly after the order had been granted, “I would urge to say it’s an opportune time to not in fact declare anyone as a party leader since it’s before the court and has to be addressed,” only to then send an official letter delineating the position as above. Either way, the matter will return to court in January, with the looming threat of general elections being called early as a further worry for both factions.
