A cause of death for the 71-year-old Hosley was not clear Monday, but an obituary for the Democratic lawmaker said he “passed suddenly” after “spending a wonderful holiday with family.” Cheryl Blodgett, the city’s commission of accounts, said Monday that Hosley’s sudden passing has left everyone “reeling.” “He had nothing but the best interest of the city at heart,” she said.
Born in Troy, Hosley worked for Momentive Performance Materials for 40 years and was an active member of the Mechanicville community, having worked with various community organizations, including Mechanicville-Stillwater Little League and Lassie League. He was also involved in various travel teams with his sons and daughter, according to his obituary. Hosley was elected as public safety commissioner in an uncontested race in 2021 and served three years of a four-year term.
It’s unclear how city lawmakers will fill the position moving forward. Hosley’s term is set to expire at the end of next year. Hosley was also credited with establishing the city’s hometown hero banners program honoring local veterans and was involved with the city’s first All-American Veteran’s Parade, and paving the way for a new splash pad at the Park Avenue playground.
He also spent time at the Mechanicville Senior Center. An avid fan of the New York Mets, Hosley was recently inducted into the Mechanicville High School Hall of Fame for his golf career. Mayor Mike Butler did not immediately return a phone call seeking comment Monday, though Blodgett said the city was expected to release a statement later in the day.
Hosley is survived by his wife, five children, four grandchildren and his sister. Calling hours for Hosley will take place between 4 and 7 p.m.
Friday at the Chase-Smith Family Funeral Homes. Funeral services and burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, Hosley’s family is asking donations in his honor be made to the Mechanicville Senior Center at 178 Main St.
