Motorists have been warned how skipping a necessary check could see them break an even more significant rule, resulting in an eye-watering penalty . With a significant percentage of drivers set to pay more the next time their road tax is due , many motorists are looking for simple ways to reduce the running costs of their car. However, Andrew Jervis, CEO of ClickMechanic , warned that skipping an MOT or refusing to pay for a retest could come with a wide range of serious consequences.
He explained: "We often see drivers fall into a tricky situation where their car fails its MOT , they put off repairs, and suddenly, they’re driving without tax, too. "It’s an easy trap to fall into, but the consequences are serious: fines, court action, and even having your vehicle clamped or impounded." While many motorists dread getting their vehicle inspected, a valid MOT is a requirement for all road-going vehicles aged between three and 40 years old.
As a result, drivers who take to the roads in a vehicle that has not passed an inspection in the past 12 months could face a fine of up to £1,000, with models deemed unroadworthy netting a penalty of £2,500. However, ClickMechanic highlighted that drivers who skip their MOT will also be unable to get it taxed. As a result, drivers who skip the test could soon find themselves shelling out a staggering £4,000.
Andrew noted that offending motorists could also be even easier to spot, with many local authorities installing AI-powered cameras with number plate recognition. He added: "AI-driven ANPR systems are advancing rapidly, and within a few years, we could see near-instant detection of untaxed or MOT-expired vehicles. "Authorities will have even greater ability to track down offenders, making it more important than ever for motorists to stay on top of tax and MOTs.
" However, in addition to the fines involved, drivers who use a vehicle that has not been properly inspected by a professional could be putting themselves and other road users at risk. During the inspection, the mechanic will check a wide range of the vehicle's safety features, including the brakes, in order to make sure they will work as expected in the event of an emergency. The inspection will also help drivers be aware of any minor defects that should be put right before the next MOT, helping them rectify small faults before they can develop into expensive repair bills.
