LIMERICK Ladies footballer Meadhbh MacNamara feels it will be a mental challenge for her side in their Division 3 Lidl Ladies National League opener against Down. In 2023, Limerick were narrowly defeated by Down in the All-Ireland junior final. “Down this weekend, it'll be a mental challenge for a good few of us.
If we can beat this, then we can beat them all. We've somthing to hold onto and connect with them from being in Croke Park. I do think that we can win to be honest, we are very strong this year and I think we are well capable of starting on a high”.
MacNamara believes the team are in good spirits ahead of the Division three National League. The Shannonsiders earned promotion from Division four last year. “We've had a lot of challenge matches.
Even after Christmas, looking at new positions. We've lot of new faces on our panel this year, there's atleast eight of them in which does throw a spanner in the works in terms of positions. “We've played Tipperary, Kerry and Clare and a few college teams aswell.
” St Ailbes and Mungret St Paul's had succesful club seasons in 2024.Mungret St Pauls were crowned All-Ireland junior champions. St Ailbes pushed O'Donovan Rossa all the way in the Munster intermediate final.
“I think it'll help with the confidence that two of the teams did really well. Obviously, Mungret did exceptionally well and with the first match being on in their pitch, it'll highlight the visibility around ladies football. “And that it's consistent and hopefully we'll be consistent at winning this year.
I think with the two wins this year, it's got a lot of publicity and especially for Mungret. That will help with highlighting the importance of the LGFA.” St Ailbes clubwoman MacNamara is entering into her sixth year playing with Limerick.
It's something that MacNamara enjoys lining out for her county. “I think the more you play it, the more you stick with it. It actually gets more enjoyable and it becomes part of the routine and the girls that you are playing with.
We are so close each time, in 2023 we got to an All-Ireland final and last year we were in the league final.”.
