MC’s contract with firm paves way for 24X7 canal water supply in Ludhiana

Times News Network Ludhiana: The MC signed a contract with a firm to start the first phase of the World Bank and Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) funded 24X7 canal based water supply project in the city on Friday. Under this project, a 580 mld (megalitre) water treatment plant will be established on 53 acres of land at Bilga village . Water sourced from the Sidhwan canal will be treated in the plant for supply to the city.

The project will be completed in two phases and the plant will be established under the first phase of the project. Officials said that the project would help raise the underground water table, reduce the incidence of waterborne diseases and ease the financial burden of operating existing tubewells. Purified water will be distributed through around 165 kilometre pipelines to elevated storage tanks in the city.



Under this project, 70 new overhead tanks will be constructed and 66 existing overhead tanks will be rehabilitated. The project is being overseen by Punjab Municipal Infrastructure Development Company (PMIDC). The firm, Ludhiana Urban Water and Wastewater Management Limited was formed for implementation of the project.

MC commissioner Sandeep Rishi said that the project would ensure reliable supply of purified drinking water to residents. He added that the water treatment plant (WTP) would be established on 53 acres of land in Bilga village and would use modern technologies to meet IS 10500 safety standards for drinking water quality. The company responsible for the construction will also oversee its maintenance for the next 10 years, utilising advanced monitoring technologies, including PLC-SCADA systems.
