Chennai: Madras Christian College (MCC) is planning to launch lake musicals to entertain walkers and senior citizens in and around Tambaram. The first programme will be conducted at the Chitlapakkam lake on Nov 30. The evening programmes will include light music by MCC students, and the public and senior citizens will also be encouraged to sing at the event.
"We are planning to conduct plays, traditional art forms, including Parai and Oyilattam, theatre, and games," said R Belinda, director of extension programmes, MCC. There will be some simple games for senior citizens and children. "Singing will be a stress buster for senior citizens, walkers, and park users.
We found that they enjoy singing during one of the events. So, musicals will improve their mental health," she added. Along with the entertainment, students will also create awareness about the environment, waste segregation, and various govt schemes.
The college choir, theatre club, volunteers from NCC, NSS, and students from various departments, including Tamil and social work, will be involved in this programme. "This is implemented as part of MCC's public engagement programme. We are also planning to give a public platform for food startups incubated at MCC-MRF Innovation Park in the programme," said Paul Wilson, principal of the college.
"It will be a monthly programme. We are planning to launch park musicals also as part of this initiative," he added. The college is also planning to collaborate with the Tambaram corporation to create awareness about various programmes during the musicals.
Professors said conducting such outreach programmes will also expose students to various issues faced by senior citizens and create empathy for them. It is also expected to improve their skills. The college also plans to involve local leaders and representatives of local bodies during these programmes.
