Times News Network Ludhiana: In a bid to curb air pollution caused by dust, the municipal corporation (MC) has resumed mechanical sweeping of city roads. The civic body has five mechanical sweeping machines and plans to buy four more to enhance cleanliness and counter shortage of sweepers. Health branch officials said that the MC should go for small machines instead of big ones so that they could reach inner streets and service lanes.

This is the second time the MC has introduced mechanical sweeping. The first attempt was made through a private firm in February 2016. However, the high cost of Rs 95,000 per kilometer led to the agreement being cancelled when the Congress government came to power.

This time, the firm providing the machines will provide staff as well. Besides, it will also be responsible for maintenance of the machines. Although technical issues have caused delays, MC officials have started mechanical sweeping on main roads at night.

Night time sweeping minimises traffic disruptions and facilitates easier cleaning. The primary objective is to eliminate dust from roads, a significant concern in the industrial town. Medical officer, health branch Dr Vipal Malhotra said that four machines were operational and four more would be purchased soon.

Meanwhile, a massive cleanliness drive was launched in the city on Thursday. Soon after taking charge, MC commissioner Aaditya Dachalwal ordered a survey across the city, following which the cleanliness drive was launched to cover all major roads and markets of the city. Joint teams of the health branch, B&R branch, horticulture and tehbazaari wing have been formed to organise the drives.
